Nepal (2025 - 2028)

Climate Smart Wash

The CSWASH (Climate Smart WASH) project is implemented in 2025-2028, and the principal aim of the project is to improve the management of water resources, reduce the adverse impacts of climate change and improve the level of water supply and sanitation. The project works in the municipality of Devchuli in the Nawalpur district of Western Nepal and the key implementing partners for WaterFinns ry are CATN and Devchuli Municipality.

The project focuses on three expected outcomes in the areas of water resources management, climate change, inclusive WASH infrastructure, and technology and expertise exchange.

The first expected outcome is improving the management of water resources and WASH infrastructure. This includes the development and maintenance of water resources and WASH infrastructure data. A climate sensitive Municipal WASH Plan is to be prepared and the municipality is supported in integrated water resource management (IWRM) planning.

The second expected outcome of the project aims to reduce the adverse impacts of climate change and improve the position and inclusion of vulnerable groups in WASH services. Climate smart and resilient water solutions are to be implemented, including Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Water Safety Planning (WSP). The position of vulnerable groups (such as minorities, women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities) is improved by implementing human-centered solutions to make WASH services more accessible. A focus is also in improving sanitation and hygiene behavior in the municipality.

The third expected outcome of the project is technology and expertise exchange in water resources management and inclusive WASH services. A Finnish technology will be selected and piloted in a real operating environment in WASH services within the project area.

The project is working in cooperation with Aalto University and Nepalese universities to provide an environment for students to develop solutions to local challenges within the project outcomes.

The Project is financed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Finland), and supported by Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry (MVTT).
